MTN Ghana is open to partnership with Starlink and is currently seeking arrangements with them to provide satellite internet for mobile users in Ghana.
During the annual MTN Media Forum in Accra, Adwoa Wiafe, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO) of MTN Ghana, mentioned that the company is open and currently pursuing partnership arrangements with Starlink. This partnership is expected to have a positive impact on Ghanaians.
Why MTN Ghana is open to partnership with Starlink
Starlink is well-known for providing satellite-based internet services, with a specific focus on delivering high-speed broadband internet to underserved and remote areas across the globe. However, it currently lacks the capability to provide satellite internet directly to mobile devices.
Recognizing this opportunity, MTN is looking to collaborate with Starlink, as Starlink does not have telecommunications infrastructure in Africa to offer internet services directly to mobile users. By partnering with leading telcos like MTN, which have extensive coverage in Africa, Starlink could expand its reach and bring satellite internet to mobile users in Africa.
MTN is ready to seize this opportunity as part of its smart partnership strategies. This aligns with the comments made by the outgoing CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh, about MTN viewing Starlink as a partner that will offer an additional channel of connectivity to better serve their customers.
Highlighting the voice of key players
“In the light of partnerships and partnering MTN Group is collaborating with Starlink so there is that opportunity. As a group, we are also exploring satellite and how that could be used across countries, and we are undertaking pilots in some countries already”
Comments of Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, during the annual MTN Media Forum.
Former CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh at the 6th Annual General Meeting of MTN Ghana said:
“MTN does not have to compete with Starlink, because ultimately Starlink provides an alternative source of capacity that is complimentary to the ecosystem to ensure continuity of service delivery.”
Ralph Mupital, MTN Group CEO, said:
“Smart partnerships is going to be the real deal for us going forward and that is what we are readying ourselves to do.”
He added:
“Part of the future of MTN is that we are not going to do everything alone. A lot of capital will be required and that is why smart partnerships will be critical”
