TikTok’s latest Q2 2024 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report has revealed that the platform removed over 2.1 million videos from Nigeria, accounting for less than 1% of total uploads during the period. The report outlines TikTok’s ongoing efforts to enforce its content moderation policies in line with its Community Guidelines.
Proactive Content Moderation in Nigeria
In a statement, TikTok highlighted the importance of regularly releasing these reports to inform governments, media, and the public about its approach to content moderation. The platform’s quarterly reports provide insight into the content and accounts removed for guideline violations.
“TikTok has a long-standing commitment to transparency, and we’re proud of our continuing work to ensure that this report provides updated and helpful insights into our Community Guidelines enforcement,” the company stated.
Global Content Removal and Automation
Globally, TikTok removed 178 million videos in June 2024, of which 144 million were automatically removed using advanced content moderation technologies. The platform’s investments in automation have reduced the need for human moderators, lowering their exposure to harmful content.
In Nigeria, the platform’s automated technology accounted for 80% of violent video removals, a significant increase from the 62% recorded a year ago. TikTok also reported a 98.2% proactive detection rate in Q2 2024, demonstrating its improved ability to identify harmful content before users flag it.
Ad Policy Enforcement and Influencer Network Disruptions
The report noted that TikTok also removed a significant number of advertisements for violating advertising policies, although there was a slight decline in account-level ad enforcement actions. TikTok assured the public that it is continually refining its systems to quickly identify and remove problematic ads.
In addition to content removal, TikTok disrupted 14 covert influence networks, eliminating 2,240 accounts with a combined following of over 1.7 million users. The company also removed 9,270 accounts from previously dismantled networks trying to re-establish their presence on the platform.
Commitment to Platform Safety and Transparency
TikTok emphasized its dedication to platform safety, stating that 99.1% of videos were removed before being reported by users, and 90.7% were removed within 24 hours of being identified. These figures reflect TikTok’s proactive approach to safeguarding users.
“As TikTok continues to invest in cutting-edge moderation technologies, its commitment to transparency and platform safety remains at the forefront, ensuring a secure environment for its diverse user base across Nigeria and globally,” the report concluded.
