A confirmed cybersecurity incident has disrupted the systems of the Otjiwarongo Municipality in Namibia, following its inclusion in our curated list of reported cyberattacks.
The breach reportedly involved data exfiltration and a ransom demand by the threat actor known as “INC Ransom.”
The Namibia Cyber Security Incident Response Team (NAM-CSIRT) detected the intrusion through credible threat intelligence and promptly notified the municipality. Immediate containment efforts were initiated to mitigate damage and protect sensitive information.
Mrs. Emilia Nghikembua, Chief Executive Officer of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) and head of NAM-CSIRT, confirmed the incident and detailed the response.
“Given the sensitivity of the matter, NAM-CSIRT has notified the municipality and recommended immediate containment measures, including data mapping to determine the extent of exposure and the isolation of affected systems,” she stated.
A formal investigation is underway to assess the scale of the breach, secure the compromised infrastructure, and identify the stolen data.
NAM-CSIRT assured stakeholders that updates will follow as the inquiry progresses without compromising the investigation’s integrity.
Top Tech has also reached out to NAM-CSIRT to learn more about the incident. Further updates will be published when they become available.
