NETSCOUT has revealed the DDoS threat intelligence report 1H of 2024 on Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks worldwide including country-specific analysis.
This report underscores the growing complexity of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) threats, including a notable increase in both attack frequency and sophistication.
This article explores essential insights and statistics you need to know from the report.
Key findings
- Application-layer attacks surged by 43% in the first half of the year, compared to the 30% increase in H1 of 2024.
- Critical infrastructure sectors, particularly banking, financial services and public utilities experienced a 55% increase in DDOS attacks in the last four years.
- There was a +50% increase in bot-infected devices.

Global highlights
- 7,962,491 DDoS attacks were observed in 1H 2024, a 12.8 % increase over the previous six months.
- Volumetric attacks are up by 30%
- More than half of all attacks are multivector.
Regional Highlight: Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)
- The EMEA region suffered 3,623,726 DDOS attacks in the H1 of 2024 which is a 25% increase compared to H2 of 2023.
- The top 10 DDoS attack vectors engineering these attacks include TCP ACK, DNS amplification, TCP SYN/ACK Amplification etc.
- Top 5 targeted EMEA countries in the first half of 2024 include Germany, France, Poland, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.
- The telecommunications sector experienced the highest number of attacks.
Focus on Ghana
According to the NETSCOUT DDoS threat intelligence report, Ghana suffered 4,753 DDOS attacks with an average duration of 34.16 minutes, a maximum bandwidth of 314.25 Gbps and a maximum throughput of 27.44 Mpps.
From these attacks, the maximum number of methods or vectors used in a single attack is 10. This means attackers are combining multiple strategies to increase their chances of success. Such complex attacks are harder to defend against because they target different areas at once, highlighting the need for strong, layered cybersecurity and user awareness to stay protected.
