Bluesky is an emerging social media platform designed with similar features as X(formerly Twitter). What makes the platform unique (not just from X but from other social media platforms) is the decentralization factor, which gives users more control over their personal data.
Instead of a single entity having access to or storing all user data in the case of a centralized system, a decentralized system stores user data across individual servers managed and controlled by users.
Users of Bluesky can add their servers on which they can store data and set their own rules, instead of using servers owned by the company.
Benefits of this decentralization?
- Users are allowed to set up their servers which they can control and store their data.
- By storing data independently on private servers, it ensures data privacy as the amount of data accessible to companies is limited because they do not have direct access to your data.
According to Forbes, Bluesky was a research project to decentralize Twitter (now X) by then CEO and co-founder of the platform, Jack Dorsey in 2019.
