WhatsApp has announced a new privacy feature called Advanced Chat Privacy, aimed at enhancing user control over how messages are shared outside the app.
The update builds on the platform’s core commitment to end-to-end encryption, which ensures that only the sender and recipient can access the content of messages and calls.
The new setting is designed to prevent recipients from exporting chats, automatically downloading media, or using messages in AI-based features
“This new setting available in both chats and groups helps prevent others from taking content outside of WhatsApp for when you may want extra privacy” WhatsApp noted in a blog post.
This development gives users more confidence that conversations will remain within the boundaries of the chat, even in group settings where not all members may be well-acquainted.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, stated that the feature is especially useful for group conversations involving sensitive discussions, such as community organizing or health-related support. By limiting the ability to take content outside WhatsApp, the feature offers added security in scenarios where privacy is paramount.
The setting can be enabled by tapping the chat name and selecting Advanced Chat Privacy. This marks the first phase of the feature, with WhatsApp planning to introduce additional protections in future updates.
The rollout has begun for users on the latest version of the app.
