The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been named the Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa in 2024 by the INTERPOL Cybercrime Directorate in Singapore.
This recognition celebrates the exceptional efforts of the National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) in combating cybercrime and sets Nigeria apart as a leader in digital security across the continent.
According to Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of NPF, the police unit performed a strategic operation that led to a significant milestone in combating cybercrime in Nigeria.
Below are some outcomes of the operation:
- Recovered Funds: The unit recovered ₦8.82 billion, 115,237.91 USD, and $84,000 USD from cyber fraud schemes, returning the funds to victims and reaffirming its commitment to justice.
- Arrests and Seizures: The operation led to the arrest of 751 individuals involved in cybercrime and the confiscation of 685 electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and servers.
The INTERPOL award highlights the innovative strategies and relentless commitment of the NPF-NCCC in combating cyber threats.
From dismantling organized networks to recovering stolen assets, the unit has demonstrated excellence in tackling the challenges posed by modern cybercriminals.
According to Sumsub Global Fraud Index 2024, Nigeria leads Africa with the highest fraud rate of 5.91%, which was a double from the previous year.
The country was also ranked 5th in a global report on sources of cybercrime activities coming behind Russia, Ukraine, China, and the United States.
The award not only underscores the unit’s impact on cybersecurity but also reinforces Nigeria’s resilience in shaping a safer digital future.
