Ghana’s Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, led by Deputy Minister Charles Acheampong, has officially launched a bilateral ECOWAS free roaming initiative between Ghana and its border countries, Togo, and Benin.
This was due to the previous successful implementation of the ECOWAS roaming initiative between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Purpose of the ECOWAS Free Roaming Initiative?
The free roaming initiative allows citizens of both countries to use mobile services in each other’s countries without incurring international roaming charges.
This initiative will enable Ghanaians in Togo and Benin to stay connected seamlessly, without facing high roaming charges or the inconvenience of using multiple SIM cards. Additionally, the initiative will waive additional fees and offer significant cost savings to citizens during the first 30 days of their stay in the visiting countries.
The ECOWAS roaming initiative aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic integration among West African nations.
Understanding Roaming
Roaming is the ability for a mobile phone user to use their phone for making or receiving calls, sending or receiving messages, and accessing data while outside the coverage of their primary network. When you roam, your phone connects to another available network, typically owned by a different provider.
In this context, free roaming is the service offered by mobile network providers in Benin and Togo to allow Ghanaian citizens to use phone services in their country without incurring additional roaming charges and vice versa. This means you can make calls, send messages, and use data without paying extra fees while travelling.
