Microsoft wants users using local account on Windows 11 to switch to using Microsoft account instead.
Most people opt for a local account when installing Windows 11 on their devices because of the privacy it offers. What privacy exactly? Not using a Microsoft account means your information is out of reach from Microsoft to throw ads at you.
Not using a Microsoft account also means you are missing out on certain benefits which will be covered in the next section.
Local account vs Microsoft account
A local account on Windows 11 is an account that runs on a particular device without connection to online services from Microsoft. For privacy purposes, most people prefer local account as it frees their information to Microsoft and even online hackers.
Microsoft account is what will make you enjoy services and products including Office, Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox Live, Microsoft 365, Family Safety, Skype, Bing, Microsoft Store and MSN.

When you initially set up your Windows device, you might have opted to use a local account instead of a Microsoft account.
If you want to switch your local account to a Microsoft account, follow these steps:
- In the Settings app on your Windows device, select Accounts > Your info or use the following shortcut: Your info
- Select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead. You’ll see this link only if you’re using a local account.
Note: if you see Sign in with a local account instead, you’re already using your Microsoft account.
